Coupons??

March 8th, 2009 at 10:42 pm

This is the reason I do not use coupons:
This week's Sunday newspaper coupons:
1. Ken's Dressing 3-$1.00 off various products.
2. Trident Gum, 2 coupons, 1 for 75 cents and 1 for $1.00 off 3 packs.
3. $4.00 off a DVD when you buy Sunmaid raisens.
4. $3.00 off Mega Red (better than fish oil).
5. 1.00 off 5 pounds of Cuties and 55 cents off 3 pounds(mandarin oranges).
6. Coupons for Olive Garden (the closest Olive Garden is 3-4 hours away).
7. BOGO and $1.00 off Airwick spray.
8. JC penny's portrait, assorted coupons.

That's it. Last week's are equally worthless to me. So I don't use coupons. It is rare to see one that is something I would even CONSIDER buying, much less something I regularly buy. Oh well, watching for sales on things I buy works.

Last week Walgreen's had Blue Emu cream on sale for $9.99 for a little jar. I bought 3, saving $24.00 in one swoop. DH uses this stuff on his elbows and when my back was flared up I used it. Today I bought Classico pasta sauce for $1.99 a jar, which is usually over $3.00 a jar. I bought 18 jars. (We don't have Trader Joe's or I would buy that brand, which I do whenever I am near).

Yes it is cheaper to make my own and I do sometimes, but it is nice to have it ready to doctor up a bit too.

I usually go directly to the website of the product I use and either download thier coupons or sign up for thier e-mail newsletters. I've done this for cat food and laundry detergent mainly. Coupons in the Sunday flyer are useless in my opinoin because they are usually for overpriced name brands or mainly for junk food, which is very unhealthy. It's more cost effective to buy store name brands at regular price.

Often, there are coupons I do not use...but when I can, I try to use those that I can...better that money stay in my pocket than spent if I can avoid it. I had better luck when I was home full time...as it does takes some time and planning to use them. Good job on the stock ups--those payoff big.

I always thought like you, but with using HotCouponWorld.com, especially their CVS forum, I have stocked up on a ton of FREE name-brand items such as razors, feminine products, shampoo & conditioner, bodywash, toothpaste, and other HABA items.

I could not do it without stockpiling manufacturer coupons so that I have them when that great sale comes around a month or 2 later. Right now I've got over $60 in CVS ExtraBucks that I can use on anything I might need in the store (excluding bread, milk & items I don't buy anyway such as lottery tickets).

I do agree that this week's coupons were pretty bad, though. Smile

I'm with MariRDH on this one. I use the coupon forums and stack coupons with sales and get a TON of free stuff. My haul from Walgreens yesterday:

2 colgate whitening toothpastes 3.49 each
5 glade lasting impressions 7.99 each
    5 glade sense & spray 7.99 each
    1 nutrisse hair color 5.99
    1 nutrisse hair color 3.19 (clearance? s/b 5.99)
3 garnier nutrisse shampoo 2.99 each
3 garnier nutrisse conditioner 2.99 each

    Subtotal: 119.48 Yikes!!!!!
    Total Wags coupons: 61.00
    Total manufacturer coupons: 54.46
    Total: 4.02
    Tax: .05
    Total paid: 4.07

Yup, some things I don't normally use but I was willing to try at that price!!

Funny, my wife was just saying how worthless coupons are because our local geocery store apparently will only apply them to full-priced items, which we almost never buy. I never knew that - must be a new thing!

I gave coupons up long ago just because they are too time-consuming and too much trouble, plus they often led me to buy things I didn't really need. I just buy sale and store-brand items and call it a day.
